As an expert in waste and circularity laws, Christine Nikander is a part of the consortium that has been selected by the Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV) of the European Commission for the “Framework Contract on the Circular Economy and Waste to Resources”.

At Palsa & Pulk, we regularly participate in conducting legal research into the national transposition and implementation of EU directives related to energy and the environment for Europe-wide research studies.​

As of the spring of 2024, Christine Nikander is participating in research for the European Commission (DG MOVE) on the national adoption and implementation of the Eurovignette Directive.

As of the spring of 2024, Christine Nikander is participating in research for the European Commission (DG EMPL) on the national transposition of the European Accessibility Act.

As of the autumn of 2022, Christine Nikander has participated in research for the European Commission (DG ENER) on the national implementation of Directive (EU) 2018/2002 on Energy Efficiency (EED) and the Directive (EU) 2018/844 on the Energy Performance of Buildings (EPBD).

As a team, we are currently working on three pro bono projects around sustainability education with non-profit organizations (such as BonoLab and Sustainability Education for Europe).

In the winter 2023 to spring 2024, we gave strategic advice to the Stockholm Environment Institute and Trase as a pro bono advisor.

Our founder, Christine Nikander regularly writes The E-Waste Column to help the broader public obtain an understanding of e-waste, critical raw materials, circularity, and what a just transition could look like.

Recent Work
12 September 2024 • Palsa & Pulk starts working together with a group of students from The Hague University of Applied Sciences for their applied research projects. With guidance from Christine Nikander and Krisna Baghouzian, the students explore key issues and opportunities that arise in context of EU and US regulations on corporate sustainability, biodiversity protection, and digital product passports.

Visualization of the life cycle of an electric vehicle battery
22 April 2024 • Palsa & Pulk starts working together with a group of students from the master program in sustainable development at Utrecht University for a consultancy project. With guidance from Christine Nikander and Saskia Tykkyläinen, the students develop a visualization of key issues and opportunities that arise in the life cycle of an EV battery.
Environmental and social justice course
5 December 2023 • Palsa & Pulk starts collaborating with a new public benefit corporation to create an educational course on environmental and social justice. Saskia Tykkyläinen and Christine Nikander create a detailed course outline with a variety of practical exercises to help students understand the role they can have in creating a more just world.
Strategic advice for Trase
30 November 2023 • Palsa & Pulk kicks off a collaboration with the Stockholm Environment Institute and Trase. Saskia Tykkyläinen and Christine Nikander provide strategic advice and are involved in the drafting of a strategy document for Trase.
Circular design course
30 November 2023 • Palsa & Pulk begins to work together with BonoLab to develop an educational course on circular design. Saskia Tykkyläinen and Christine Nikander act as subject matter experts for the course and create a detailed course storyboard covering design principles and strategies, product life cycles, consumer behaviour, and design solutions.
10 October 2023 • Palsa & Pulk helps Sustainability Education for Europe (SEFE) create a new educational project to raise awareness on the role of soil in storing carbon, mitigating climate change, and protecting biodiversity. Christine Nikander and Heidrun Kordholste-Nikander work on developing course materials to educate children and adults on the benefits of caring for soils in their gardens, in the agriculture and forestry sectors, and on Earth more broadly.
